The old railroad town's depot lies abandoned next toa still busy north-south railroad line and the quiet community on either side of the tracks dozes in country stillness. The general store and two-story school building are also abandoned, but some nice homes and reminders that this is a still working farming community keep this place very much on the map still. You just have to have a good map to find it.

In a small town near the main streets, a quiet residential district, a picket fence and an oak tree. Peaceful and nice as I walk around on a lazy summer Saturday afternoon.

A perfect rural scene in Williamsburg County, S.C., recently, during an afternoon road trip through the countryside of three counties. An abandoned house was to the right in this scene, and the summer light was bright and crystal clearn.

I love to find old general stores way out in the country. On my recent road trip in east central South Carolina, I came across these relics of a bygone age, a couple of them still operating and thriving, a couple abandoned and lost to time.

The walk to Pearson's Falls in North Carolina took me past seeps and springs where little miniature waterfalls created damp and verdant pockets along the path. Trillium were in bloom when I was there this past April.

Cloud reflections on the surface of a small pond near the Ashley River at Magnolia Gardens on an early summer day about a month ago. The memory of that beautiful place clearly returns when I see this picture.

Right after I stopped by the road to take this photo of a gorgeous Spring landscape in the mountains of North Carolina, near Brevard, I drove alongside a trout stream for miles, gazing at the wading anglers, and marveling at the beauty of the little river as it wound its way to the larger river it would join for it's journey to the sea. How exquisitely beautiful is Nature's handiwork.

Spring is but a memory now in these hot days of July, but I remember so well taking this photo of a huge oak tree at Hampton Park a few months ago. The leaves were just starting to come out. Now what a different world. The leaves are dark green on the oak tree outside my window as I watch them rustle in a slight and warm breeze.

This is a scene from a visit this past spring to a state park where I walked a path among blooming azaleas and some of the largest and most numerous live oaks I have ever seen. These majestic trees never cease to astonish me. I grew up in New Orleans surrounded by them. They evoke some of my earliest memories of place and time. I think back on this visit now on a hot summer day in July and long for the cool breezes of April, as I also travel back in time.

What do shadows reveal? I think they show us what we cannot see with our normal vision.
